August 22nd. It is one year plus one day since a tornado tore through the heart of Goderich. Yesterday the event was observed by CTV with Canada AM broadcast segments live from the town square. At the supper hour a London CTV news affiliate also broadcast live from the square. A memorial has been dedicated in recognition of the disaster and a neighbourhood gathering/concert recently celebrated the progress which has been made over the past year.
All of which causes me to reflect on the past twelve months. With sadness for all that was lost in those twelve seconds. With a sense of thankfulness because, in spite of the devastation and loss, it could have been so very much worse. With hope, inspired by the numerous acts of kindness and unselfishness in the aftermath, by determination to see the town centre rebuilt and replanted and by optimism which would see something better for Goderich in the years ahead.
